Our Approach to Environmental Sustainability

Guided by our approved science-based targets, we focus on lowering GHG emissions, expanding renewable-electricity use, and improving energy efficiency across our operations. We continue to strengthen our approach to water stewardship and waste reduction. 100% of our active manufacturing sites are certified to the ISO14001 environmental management system, reinforcing our commitment to strong environmental governance and continuous improvement.

Our products also help create a more efficient, connected world—enabling faster, lower-power communication networks and reducing the need for travel through digital access and advanced photonics technologies. As data demands rise with AI and machine learning, we remain focused on innovation that supports a lighter global footprint.

Together, we’re advancing environmental sustainability that benefits our business, our customers, and the planet we share.

Science-Based, Net Zero Targets

Addressing climate change is a key priority for Lumentum and our stakeholders. We are committed to achieving net-zero Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions from our global operations by 2030. Our near-term (2030) and long-term (2050) GHG reduction targets were approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

To reach these goals, we have been increasing the share of renewable electricity used across our global operations each year. All facilities in Europe and North America, our largest manufacturing site in Thailand, and three sites in China operate on 100% renewable electricity.

We also operate on-site solar generation at three sites, including our headquarters in San Jose, California, and our production sites in Thailand and Slovenia.

Our journey to net zero is an ongoing commitment to operate responsibly, reduce emissions across our value chain, and help enable a lower-carbon world.

Climate Impact and Transparency

Lumentum recognizes the global effort needed to address climate change and the importance of transparency in our progress. Since 2017, we have reported annually to CDP’s Climate Change Questionnaire, which aligns with the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) framework.

Since 2023, Lumentum maintains a CDP Climate Change score of B, above the regional and industry average, reflecting our commitment to managing emissions and strengthening climate governance. The B score indicates that Lumentum has addressed its environmental impacts and ensures good environmental management.

We also conduct independent third-party assurance of our greenhouse gas inventory each year to ensure accuracy and accountability.

Water

Access to clean water is essential for life and for sustainable operations. Across all sites, Lumentum uses water for production, heating and cooling, facility maintenance, and domestic purposes. Water quality and environmental impacts are managed through programs within our Environmental Management System (EMS), which include wastewater treatment and stormwater runoff.

We also evaluate water risks and impacts through our annual participation in CDP’s Water Security Questionnaire, which we have completed since 2017. Since 2024, Lumentum maintains a B rating, reflecting effective management and transparency in water stewardship.

We have water risks assessments in place to identify site-specific risks and opportunities for improvement. Our goal is to reduce total water withdrawal by 5% by FY26, supporting sustainability of our business and the communities where we operate.

Waste

Lumentum is committed to reducing waste and managing materials responsibly across our global operations. Our sites generate both hazardous and non-hazardous waste through our production processes and from general operations. The generation of hazardous waste is inherent in our industry, but at Lumentum, we ensure strict compliance with all local laws as they relate to the generation, treatment, and transportation of hazardous waste.

We continue to increase recycling and diversion efforts for non-hazardous waste, with a goal to achieve 90% waste diversion from landfills by FY27.

Materials and Product Compliance

Lumentum is committed to meeting or exceeding all applicable customer requirements and environmental regulations governing materials and substances in our products. We take proactive steps to anticipate and respond to emerging regulations.

We comply with major directives and regulations, including REACH,RoHS, and WEEE, and maintain public position statements on each. Our teams participate in technical working groups and stakeholder consultations on EU RoHS legislation and exemption reviews to stay current and plan product development accordingly.

We work closely with suppliers to ensure transparency and compliance across our value chain. All suppliers must complete Lumentum’s Compliance Data Form to disclose material composition and any regulated substances, which is required for product qualification. Our teams continuously monitor emerging regulations, evaluate products against the IEC 62474 declarable-substances list, and collaborate with suppliers to reduce hazardous substances in our designs.
